BONACHON ASADO DE BAJA SUR IN EL TEZAL

John Anderson, Editor

Located on the paved road to El Huerto Farm-to-Table off the frontage road from Costco is an interesting restaurant named Bonachon Asado de Baja Sur. The restaurant has parking in the back and both indoor and outdoor dining areas. The outdoor dining areas are both a patio at the front and in the bar area at the back. There is also a children’s playground set up in the back. I was greeted at the front door and led to an inside table where our friends Bill and Dianne were already seated.

Our server handed out the menu that had food on one side and drinks on the other. The menu is a very interesting and eclectic selection of the dishes. Botanas (appetizers included melted cheese, guacamole, gyozas stuffed with beef tongue and shrimp in dark beer and serrano pepper ponzu. There is also fresh oysters or sashimi to start as well as salads – Caesar and Betabel. For a main course, you can choose from tacos of all kinds o grilled steaks. There were also Garnachas – flautas, quesadillas, and other stuffed tortilla choices. Sides included grilled onion, beans, and grilled veggies. The server also let us know that they had a special for the table to share of six small al pastor tacos with guacamole all on a large tray.

We ordered our drinks – Pacifico for Bill and Dianne – limonadaminerale for Beth and Diet Coke for me as we studied the menu. They brought us a tray with three salsas of different levels of space, tortilla chips and a small bowl of beans with ground chorizo on top as a complimentary appetizer. Bill decided to start with the Queso Fundido (melted cheese) that was served with four flour tortillas. He also ordered the al pastor special for the table. Beth ordered two of the grilled steak tacos, I selected a sirloin strip taco with black beans and guacamole and a side of the grilled onion and Dianne also had a simple taco. The flavors were great. The onion was large and delicious. The tacos were a little spicy for Beth (pepper is too much spice for her) and so she gave one of them to Bill. We all tasted the small al pastor tacos, which were also very good.

Bill and Dianne decided to have dessert. Dianne chose the carrot cake with popcorn cornbread and ice cream and Bill asked for the Tres Leche, which was served in a cylinder, which when removed the sauce flowed over the cake.

The atmosphere of Bonachon is very pleasant, the service was excellent with all questions answered about the menu and choices, and the food flavors and taste were great.
