This year has been much more active than the last several years with storm activity. Los Cabos has been lucky as most of the storms have moved westward and only left a little rain in their path. However, Hurricane Hilary, a Category 4 storm looked like it could make a serious hit on Los Cabos and so everyone was preparing. We took in our furniture and put up the hurricane screens.
Loss of power is always a potential issue when a hurricane hits. Often CFE can be out for days. We are lucky to have solar at our townhouse in Pueblo Campestre, but the heat has depleted the batteries as we used the air conditioners more than normal. On Friday morning we were only at 17% and the skies were completely overcast. Oscar Diaz from Innovacion Solar sent me a WhatsApp asking permission to change the settings on the inverter remotely so that the batteries did not support the load center in the home – items not directly linked to solar (e.g., the air conditioners) until after the storm passed. This means that the batteries would not be depleted. One of the great things about Blue Ion lithium-ion batteries is that they will charge with glare despite rain and overcast skies. So late in the afternoon our batteries were up to 45% from 17%. Overnight, the batteries were not used and so by 10:00am, again with glare, the batteries had charged to 64% with two hours left to a full charge. As a result, going into another night of rain and storms we will be 100% charged.
