Located one street north of downtown and parallel to Blvd Mijares is Abby’s Place. This small local two-story restaurant has great food, friendly services and a nice atmosphere. You can either sit inside or on the upper deck, with a sunshade. Beth really likes their tempura style shrimp tacos. I ordered some tortilla soup and then asked if they would make me veggie tacos (they are not on the menu). They did an incredible job and the taco had avocado, lettuce and a wide range of grilled vegetables – peppers, onions, carrots, zucchini, green beans and more – delicious!

If you are interested in Chinese food, Jardin Hunan is a great place to go for lunch dinner or take out. The menu has a number of tourist specials that include fried rice and an egg roll with your choice of entrée. We decided to start with soup and each order a different soup – Wonton and Chicken Vegetable – thinking they were small bowls. Out came bowls big enough to serve four people easily. Needless to say, lots went home. Beth ordered the Beef and Broccoli from the Tourist Specials. She was very surprised and pleased that the fried rice included chicken, pork and beef and said the sauce on the beef and broccoli was amazing. I ordered the Vegetarian plate that included a great selection of vegetables and white rice. It was very good and the oyster sauce was very tasty. Again, the portions were so big that we both took at least half of our lunches home. The place is clean, the staff are great and the prices are excellent.

Located on Valerio Gonzales (Walmart Street) next to the Auto Shine car wash, Taqueria Mexico has a great menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We often time our visits to the car wash to be a lunch time so that we can stop in here for lunch. As always, we started with their guacamole, which is delicious and comes with pico de gallo and a spicy salsa. With this visit, Beth ordered the Tropical Salad and was shocked when it came with a bird carved out of an apple on top. The presentation was amazing. I ordered the baked stuff potato with mushrooms. As the potato comes with tortillas (in my case flour), I was able to also make a few mushroom tacos as I enjoyed my baked potato. The service is always friendly and fast. We had a great lunch.
