We watched with interest and curiosity as a new building was being constructed in the Fresko shopping center just south of Palmilla. As it was being completed, the signs went up saying “Dupuis Mexico 1973”. I went online and did a search and learned that Dupuis was a furniture and interior design company that was founded in Mexico. Its ambition was to marry traditional artisanal and modern Mexican designs to create unique furniture and accessories for the luxury market. Their philosophy is to continually evolve and innovate with the furniture and accessories that they offer.

As I saw the showroom being set up, I stopped by and met the manager, Rocio de la Torre Labastida and her assistant manager, Lorenia. While Depuis has stores in a number of cities in Mexico, this is there first venture into the Baja. Prior to deciding to enter the market, they did some mystery shopping to identify the best practices and challenges of the current furniture stores in the market. The biggest obstacle to buyers appeared to be the availability and timing of delivery of furniture – often taking three to six months to receive their orders.

Depuis Mexico 1973 is committed to meeting short delivery deadlines for its customers. This will be achieved with a significant inventory of products warehoused in Los Cabos and the fact that about 50% of their furniture is designed and manufactured by Depuis. The other 50% is imported.

Visiting the showrooms on two floors, there is a great selection of bedroom, dining room, living room, bar and home office furniture. In addition, there is a wide range of accessories – dish ware, glass ware, center pieces, paintings, sculptures, and linens. A review of their catalogs shows even more from which to choose.
