Tre Galline - The Old and New Locations

John Anderson, Editor

One of our favorite restaurants for dinner in Todos Santos is Tre Galline. The building where Tre Galline was located since 2013 has been put up for sale and as a result, the owners found a new location right on the main street of Todos Santos (Benito Juarez) right beside La Morena. Over the summer of 2023 the space was completely renovated with two inside and three outside dining areas. While the old location was traditional with brick walls, the new location is modern with interesting wood slat walls and dining covers in the outside space that show the brick walls of adjoining buildings. Although the new location has a sleeker look, it maintains the traditions of the old location in the roosters and artwork placed around the restaurant.

The new location opened in November 2023 and maintains the same excellent menu as the old location. There are several salads as well as carpaccio from which to choose as appetizers, chicken, rib eye and fish selections on the main course list and a long list of homemade pasta selections. For our last visit to the old locations, we took our friends Mike and Michele from Colorado with us, and we enjoyed the fresh rolls to start. We chose several salads and the baked eggplant as appetizers. Our main was three different pastas – sweet potato tortelli, macaroni in a sauce of parmesan cream and chile serrano and tagliatelle with pistachio pesto, bacon and shrimp – and a fresh fish with grilled vegetables, cherry tomatoes and orange slices. What a range of delicious foods! But we weren’t finished. Dessert was creme brulé and tiramisu. We left stuffed and happy.

Last week, we returned to Todos Santos to experience the new location. We were greeted by Constantino, the manager and son of Chef Angelo and Magda, all members of a long-time family of restaurant owners. Constantino gave me a tour and talked about the process of renovating the new space and what still needed to be done. The restaurant has a huge backyard that could one day become an event space.

We were seated. I ordered some chardonnay. Fresh rolls, olive oil and balsamic vinegar were set on the table as we reviewed our choices from the menu. We were offered a fish coquette as an amuse by the chef. Beth decided to have the almond crusted sea bass with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. There were three huge pieces of fish (two went home for our dinner the next night). I selected the spaghetti with anchovies and cherry tomatoes. It was the first time that I have finished my whole entrée at Tre Galline – it was so good. We were full and decided to pass on dessert as we had the long drive back to San Jose del Cabo.

Chef Angelo and Magda dropped by and we learned that they continue to run Caffe Todos Santos, now for more than brunch. In fact, pizza is a specialty and there is also a daily special. We will be back to try it soon.

If you love Italian food, Todos Santos is a great place to visit. Whether it is Tre Galline, Caffe Todos Santos or Il Giardino, you will experience excellent food from true Italian chefs, amazing service and a great atmosphere.
