Agave Kitchen in The Art District in San Jose del Cabo

John Anderson, Editor

There are so many restaurants in Los Cabos and we have only tried a small portion of them. We decided to try Agave Kitchen on the rooftop at the corner of Jose Maria Morelos and Obregon in the Art District. While the man on the street tries a little too hard to get people into the restaurant, we already had a reservation. As you enter the main floor of the building, you see a tequila tasting room with a bar and a table with lots of different types of tequila on display. We were led up the stairs where there are three distinct outdoor dining areas on second floor of the building. We were taken to a table on the highest level near the bar and kitchen of Agave Kitchen and offer menus for the food, cocktails and wine available at the restaurant.

The menu at the restaurant offers a number of Mexican dishes on two pages with choices of a few appetizers and main courses ranging from seafood – catch of the day, octopus, shrimp and more – to steaks, short ribs, chicken, suckling pig and pasta. As we had eaten a late lunch, we decided to forgo appetizers and focus on the main course. Both Beth and Michele ordered the roasted chicken with a sweet potato purée and vegetables. Mike decided on the short ribs with chile adobo, cactus and corn tortillas. My selection was the fettuccine with a sauce of braised short ribs, white recado, asparagus, and parmigiano reggiano.

Our server let us know that the roasted chicken would take about 20 minutes and so we ordered water and a bottle of Casa Madero Chardonnay. We were also served two small plates of crispy toast with an amazing pumpkin butter that we all devoured.

When the meal came, the portions were very generous and the flavors great. We decided to end our meal with the pear crumble dessert, which was also amazing. Beth and Michele left the restaurant with large to go boxes with half of their roast chicken for lunch the next day.

Overall, it was a very good experience. The only challenge was the lighting on the dark rooftop. We needed the flashlights on our phones to read the menu.
