El Grill in San Jose del Cabo

One of our favorite stops for Greek and Mediterranean food is El Grill on the frontage road just north of the light one block from Valerio Gonzalez (the Walmart street) on the main highway in San Jose del Cabo. We arrived for an early dinner and Waleed, the owner and chef was behind the bar, working on a new drink menu for the restaurant. He was preparing some new Spritzes and brought us two to try. They were very tasting and refreshing – a great warm weather drink.

Our server brought us the menu and we noticed that there had been a number of new additions since we had last been at El Grill. Waleed, frequently updates the menu with new items and adjusts it based on his customers response. Waleed is from northern Iraq and has been a chef in Cyprus, Greece and London before moving to Los Cabos to marry his Mexican wife Blanca and fulfill his dream of having his own restaurant.

We ordered drinks – me a Chardonnay and Beth a special lemonade. We decided to start our dinner with the potato salad that we had ordered from the previous updated menu. It is truly a Greek potato salad with chunks of potato, avocado, onions, basil and an olive oil dressing. It is absolutely incredible. Waleed had added a Mediterranean tomato soup to the menu, which I decided to have as a first course. Often, I find that the tomato soup in Los Cabos is very acidic. This was not and had a great flavor.

For main courses, Beth ordered the Chicken Souvlaki – a huge kabob with chicken, onions and zucchini severed with rice and fresh pea pods. I selected the new Chicken pasta that was spaghetti with chicken, onions, peppers and greens. It was also very good.

As always, Waleed stopped by to ask our opinions of the food. It was excellent and so was the service. This is a great place to go when you are in San Jose del Cabo.
