LAGUNA PRIME MARKET

John Anderson, Editor

Located on Valerio Gonzalez (the Walmart street) across from Water World and the school is a small market (about 500 square feet) – Laguna Prime that features a wide range of authentic Mexican products to enhance your cooking. Whether you are firing up the BBQ or putting the pan on the stove in your kitchen, Laguna Prime offers you some great products to enhance the flavors of whatever you are preparing. While the space is small, every wall and the center of the store is taken up with shelves, hanging racks or freezers.

As you enter the front door, the check-out counter is straight ahead with a large Laguna Prime logo. In front of the counter to the right is a cooler with ice cream products. On the wall are about 60 small bags of seeds, nuts, dried chiles, dried fruit, and more. Looking to the center of the room, there is a large display. The front side are shelves full of every flavor of salsa or rubs to make your food taste better – garlic, herbs, Texas BBQ, Kansas BBQ, mesquite, chili chipotle, serrano, chicharron, and Tabasco. The back side of the center display includes a freezer display with shelves about it featuring more salsas and cooking utensils. The two freezer has sections have vacuum packed and frozen special meet products.

If you are firing up your BBQ, on the front wall are a series of different types of wood chips to give you smoke (and food) more flavor. There are also products to elevate your BBQ experience. The whole side wall is another series of racks with larger bags of about 60 different seeds, nuts, dried fruits, dried vegetables and spices, and even chocolate. These will let you spice up your salads or sauces that you are making for your family. Many of them are also great snacks straight from the bag.

The back wall of Laguna Prime is where you can find the prime meats from Sonora and Coahuila. Rancho El 17 from Sonora is consider one of the suppliers of the highest quality beef in Mexico and is USDA Prime for export to the United States. The first four upright freezers contain all different cuts of meats in different thicknesses perfect for BBQ or stove. There is hamburger meat, meatballs, T-bones, Rib Eye, New York, and more. There is also a selection of pork products. The final freezer contains some cheeses, chorizo, tortillas, and natural sodas.

I decided to buy a pack of thin cut Rancho El 17 New York steaks. New York steaks are $700 pesos a kilo. This package had seven steaks and weighed about 480 grams, and so cost under $400 pesos. I have eaten almost the whole package. One or two of these steaks in a frying pan with salt and pepper for less than a minute or two with some vegetables creates a very tasting meal.
