CITY MARKET IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO IS NOW OPEN!

John Anderson, Editor

We watched the construction on the former Fonatur space at the roundabout in San Jose del Cabo for several months. Ultimately, we heard that it was going to be City Market, the highest level of store of La Comer (La Comer, Fresko, City Market). People who had visited City Market locations in Mexico City raved about the store and the experience. We then heard that City Market was planning to open before Christmas. We were stunned and didn’t quite really believe it. Even though the construction crew was working three shifts, how could they stock it, train all of the staff and get everything in place in only a few more weeks.

Well, on Tuesday, December 16th they opened. People were standing on the all of the streets leading toward City Market with big signs announcing that they were opening. Staff were outside directing traffic for people to enter the two-floor parking structure underneath the store. The two top floors offered almost everything that you could want related to food and drink. We parked and took the moving sidewalk up to the first floor. A large flower section was right at the top of the moving sidewalk. I decided to walk around the outside of the floor to get a feel for what was there.

Along the whole right wall in both closed coolers and in displays across from them were fresh fruits and vegetables. They looked amazing – from organic products to eggs in the last cooler at the end of the displays on the first floor. Any vegetable that needed to be chilled was displayed in the cooler section – organics, lettuce, salads, mixed leaves, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, corn on the cob, carrots, gourmet items, fine herbs, and even salad dressings. Both the selection and the freshness was amazing.

Right at the back on the right side was a smoothie station, where you could take a break. Along the back was a section with organics and the a very large dairy and frozen food section. The back wall and the start of the wall on the left side are covered with coolers carrying all kinds of products including milk, cheeses, yoghurts, desserts, across from these, were the coolers for all kinds of beverages – sodas, beer and more.

In the middle of the whole store were 10 aisles offering all of the typical products in a grocery store and more – 10 (beers, mixes, sodas), 9 (water, sports drinks, juices), 8 (paper napkins, snacks, popcorn), 7 (paper products, detergents and cleaning tools), 6 (cookies, coffee, jams, flour), 5 (milk, cereals, bread, oats), 4 (beans, rice, pasta, spices), 3 (salsas, mayo, dressings), 2 and 1 (imported and gourmet foods).

All the left was was a large spa section, pharmacy and a home section with serving pieces and more near the self-checkout the checkout counters along the front of the first floor.

Now, it was time to ascend to the second floor. This is truly a gourmet flour. Along the right wall at the top of the stairs starts with the Bakery – offering breads, pastries, rolls, cookies and more. Next is the Chocolateria with all types of chocolate treats from treats to cakes and pies. It is followed by ice cream area.

At the back of the store is a Gourmet section and kitchen with pre-prepared meals and items to go. Along the left wall from back to front is an amazing seafood section with freshly-caught fish and seafood items. There is even a lobster tank with live lobster. The next section is for meat with both items in the coolers and display cases of all different kinds of meat that can even be cut to your requirements. The rest of the left wall is dedicated to the most amazing selection of spirits and wines of any place in Los Cabos (or even the United States and Canada). You can choose from virtually every brand of tequila, rum, vodka, gin and liqueurs. But the spirits area is outdone by the wine area. Not only is the collection extensive but there is a security wine room, which only allows one customer at a time with two staff to view some of the finest wines and champagnes in the world – from Opus One from California to some of the best Montrachets and Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. Across from the entry to that room is another featuring cigars. On the south end of the wine area is a complete selection of wine glass, carafes and more to enjoy your favorite vintage.

At the front of the second floor is an incredible Deli section offering cheeses, meats, cold cuts and even kosher items. A server was there offering tastes of the fine thinly-sliced ham.

If you are interested in trying some of the fine foods available, the second floor has a number of different restaurants from which to choose. These range from a Cafe that offers different coffees, teas, hot chocolate and more. Pintxos is right in the center of the second floor and has an extensive menu of soups, ceviche, sushi, as well as breakfast items, salads, tacos, cazuelas, desserts and more. Beside Pintxos is Bar do Mar with all kinds of seafood choices. These two large restaurant areas offer seating at a bar surrounding each.

Il Grissini is the main sit-down restaurant on the second floor. There is seating both inside and outside on a balcony that overlooks La Comer and the mountains to the west. The menu offers appetizers, salads, hamburgers, pizza and more. The service is great and the restaurant is very comfortable.

There is also a large section at the back of the second floor focused on BBQs and accessories. With a dozen or more BBQ on display and a rack of the accessories. The second floor also has areas offering cooking accessories and coffee makers and more.

City Market is a lot to take in during a single visit to the store. It will take several visits to truly explore what the store has to offer. But overall, it is absolutely amazing!
