CARLOS DE LA CRUZ JEWELER

John Anderson, Editor

We have used Carlos de la Cruz on Alvaro Obregon in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo across from Mi Casa Restaurant a few times to create custom jewelry for Beth and friends. For Carlos de la Cruz, jewelry is a family tradition. With a grandfather and father who are jewelers, he started to learn his trade at 11 years old. He worked with his father, his cousins and others to learn at a young age. He learned how to make his own tools, create his own lost wax molds and heat and mold silver with a blow torch rather than a laser heating tool.

Coming from Puerta Vallarta to Cabo San Lucas, Carlos began his career here working with a jeweler who was a friend of his father. Within a workshop, it was his job to create the designs for other jewelers. He continued this tradition with his move to San Jose del Cabo, often working to create the jewelry for major retailers in the area like Sanchez Jewelers. As the pieces that were commissioned from him often sold quickly, Carlos decided that it was time to move from a workshop jeweler, creating works for others to having his own retail location. With the help of a friend, the two renovated his small workshop space on the main street (Alvaro Obregon) in the Art District in downtown San Jose into a retail space.

This trip to Carlos was for Beth to have several rings resized. After surgery on trigger fingers, he hands a swollen a little and so she need to increase the size of her engagement and wedding bands. Carlos had recently created a new wedding band from old gold. He explained that increasing the size of the three gold bands was not a problem. Two had small nubs on the inside that could just be reduced. However, the platinum band on the diamond ring was more of an issue as the only way to increase its size was to pound and stretch it as platinum could not be added. He asked for a week to finish the work.

It was done and the end of the week and was perfect. He noted, however that one of the small diamonds in one of the rings was cracked and suggested replacing it. After consideration, he replaced it with a sapphire, which has the hardness and the look of the diamond. This took a few days extra.

Carlos always does an excellent job at a very reasonable prices with the quality of a professional jeweler.
