A NEW BACKSPLASH ON OUR OUTDOOR KITCHEN

John Anderson, Editor

Originally, we have the same white tile that was in our kitchen installed as a backsplash for our outdoor kitchen. After a few years, we recognized our mistakes. First, the backsplash needed to go to the top of the wall and not just part way up. Second, because of this, the smoke from the BBQ had actually blackened the wall behind it – and it was impossible to clean.

So, we went to Terrazul Tiles in Chamizal to pick interesting tiles to do the backsplash. Given that we have a mural on the long wall of the patio, we wanted tiles that would bring out the colors. Terrazul is the best source in San Jose del Cabo for handmade tiles. After an hour of looking at the different shapes and colors, Beth finally decided on the shape and three colors that she would like to use for the backsplash as well as the border that would be around it. We ordered the tiles.

We contacted Eduardo Almazan of Home Maintenance and Improvement by Eduardo to plan the installation with his brother Sergio. When we received the tile, Eduardo brought the team to demo the existing backsplash and take down the lights, which we had decided to replace with the same terracotta sconces that were on the house. The team also removed the sink faucet, electrical switches, and the BBQ to allow complete access. Sergio then recommended the pattern to install and talked with Beth about her preference for spacing and the color of the grout. Because of the uneven nature of the handmade tiles, the size of the spacer was decided.

Sergio and Betty roughed the wall and started to carefully place all of the tiles following the agreed upon pattern. As they neared the positioning of the light fixtures, they determine that they had not been installed in the same position in relation to the countertop and had to more the electrical boxes somewhat. The started to place the edge pieces to ensure that the cuts were perfect on the outside pieces. Once all of the tile was placed, Betty and Sergio started the application of the grout between the tiles.

We watched carefully along the way as the work was being done and we very pleased with the outcome. The colors were perfect for the patio – its artwork and furniture. Thank you Eduardo, Sergio, Betty and team.
