EL GRILL IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO

John Anderson, Editor

We have been visiting El Grill, the Greek and Mediterranean restaurant for over four years. It is located on the frontage road going south before the light a block north of Walmart in San Jose del Cabo. Waleed, the chef and owner is from northern Iraq and has cooked in Cyprus, Greece and London before moving to Los Cabos (with his soon to be Mexican wife, Blanca) to fulfill his dream of having his own restaurant. The restaurant is under a large palapa with a bar that runs down the left side.

The menu at El Grill is refreshed regularly with new items been added for regular diners, like us to try. There are traditional Greek dishes as both appetizers and main courses. So, if you like, dips like hummus, tapenade or tzatziki, or Greek Salad and souvlaki (kebabs), you will find them on the menu. While we were looking at the menu, our server brought us some tortilla chips with a Mediterranean tomato salsa.

Beth ordered some tapenade as an appetizer. The olive-based dip comes with fresh warm pita bread and is excellent. For main courses, I chose the chicken souvlaki, The two large kabobs are served with grilled mushrooms and green beans and some yoghurt-based tzatziki dip. There was so much chicken on the kabobs with onions and peppers that I took one home for a lunch the next day. Beth decided on the chicken parmegiana. It usually comes with eggplant but she asked Waleed to substitute grilled vegetables – the same green beans and mushrooms. The chicken was served with a bowl of rice pilaf.

The flavors of all of the dishes at El Grill are great and the service is friendly and quick. As always, we enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere and stopped to talk with Waleed on our way out. The kitchen is open and just to the right as you enter the restaurant.
