Located on Calle Benito Juarez just a few steps from the roundabout on Blvd Antonio Mijares in downtown San Jose del Cabo, across from the new Banorte is Eddie’s Tequila, Tacos and Beer. This is no typical Mexican restaurant. Eddie has come from homeless to becoming an entrepreneur with three businesses in this location. Eddie describes how the pandemic and God changed his life. He started a jewelry business after buying some silver, without any fancy tools to design and make his jewelry. With the help of customers and friends, his jewelry was sold by them with a message to help the people of Los Cabos during that hard time by buying Eddie’s jewelry. This action by his friends and supporters made him realize that he too needed to give back and support the community.
Now he has created a home for his jewelry business, tequila tasting and his tattoo studio – all in one location. He describes Eddie’s Tequila, Tacos and Beer as a kitchen rather than a restaurant and as a place where he wants people to get together, meet others, share a great vibe and be able to have a good meal – even if they are on a pension. And, a review of the menu demonstrates just that – great prices for good food in large portions. On Thursday, you can get two Classic Burgers for $300.00 pesos. They are large, covered with bacon, cheese, onions, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles as well as crispy French Fries.
I had been seeing his videos on social media for weeks with many promoting his BINGO games. When you enter the restaurant, the front portion has two long tables with equipale chairs, where everyone can sit together. There is also another dining area up a few steps with smaller tables and a half-a-dozen display cases of his jewelry. The first day I went to just see the restaurant and have lunch. I ordered the Classic Burger and it was great. I had the opportunity to talk to Eddie to learn his story and he told me that there was going to be a bingo game the next afternoon at 2:00 pm. I decided to go back to see what it was all about.
A total of 40 people came to play bingo. The buy in is $200 pesos, which includes your first margarita. Eddie explains the rules – every bingo is rewarded with a shot of tequila. if you don’t want the tequila, you have to designate someone to drink it for you. As the game goes on with dozens of bingos and many of the numbers have been called, Eddie announces BLACKOUT. This is when there will be no more individual bingos and the players need to cover their whole board. The blackout prize is $2,000 pesos. Throughout the afternoon, bingo was being called and Eddie and another woman would take a large bottle of tequila to give the caller a shot – not in a glass but head back and directly into their mouth. Often there were five or six DRiNKOS (the name for a Bingo) at the same time.
After the two rounds of bingo, he announced the two for one special on hamburgers. The crowd had a great time. First timers were introduced and given a shot. I sat in the upper section and ordered both chicken nachos and al pastor tacos along with diet coke – rushing down to take pictures through the afternoon.
Eddie’s Tequila, Tacos and Beer is a place for fun, with a great vibe, and to meet new people and share food and drinks. It is truly worth a visit. And Eddie is truly a character.
