TALK OF THE TOWN

John Anderson, Editor

The municipality over the past seven years has worked to bridge the historical gap between the foreign residents and the government of the municipality. The previous mayor committed in his campaign to create two-way communication between these two important groups. This was done with the formation of the Foreign Residents Advisory Committee and the creation of CATTAC – Center of Attention to Tourism Assistance Cabo – located in a building on the marina in Cabo San Lucas. Nohemi Romero Guzmán is charged with a wide range of responsibilities to provide coordination to the municipal attention to foreign residents.

One of the important programs that they offer is Talk of the Town. Two separate Talk of the Town meetings are held each month – one for residents and one for businesses. The most recent Talk of the Town was held at Senora Cocina Casa & Cantina in the Shoppes at Palmilla. This Talk of the Town meeting had a representative of CFE to talk about emergency preparedness especially during hurricanes and the CFE app and representatives of TLVsertec, a solar company to talk about the importance and availability of solar in Los Cabos. The final speaker was Nohemi Romero Guzmán to describe her role and responsibilities within the community of foreign residents in Los Cabos.

The first speaker from CFE talked about the Hurricane Contingency plan, which is coordinated with the local and state Civil Defense Council. He described the top priorities of making sure that hospitals, government authorities, grocery stores, water supply, police stations, National Guard and Army stations, Firefighter stations, the Red Cross headquarters, shelters, gas stations, communication systems and financial institutions have power to operate as soon as possible after any hurricane. He talked about the restoration of power and recommendation for consumer to protect themselves – generators, enough fuel supply, groceries and ice and purified water. Question from the floor were addressed. The final topic was about the use of the CFE app, which requires a Mexican phone or sim card to be able to download bills for up to 10 service and pay on line (with a Mexican credit card but no American Express). He explained the payment systems on both the app and the CFE website are handled by a third-party company.

The second speakers were from TLVsertec, a solar energy company founded in Los Cabos in 2013. Mayra Pantoja and the engineer from the firm presented their overall approach to solar system design and installation in people’s homes. They outline the main components of the solar system, their role, and provided some examples of systems that they installed. TLVsertec will come to your home to do and evaluation and provide you a plan and estimate for a solar system that will meet your energy needs.

The final speaker was Nohemi Romero Guzmán who provided an in-depth description of the broad role that she plays for foreign residents of Los Cabos. This ranges from providing broad opportunities for communication and consultation with the municipal government to planning and implementing the Talk of the Town series, to supporting the Board of the Foreign Residents Advisory Committee to linking non-profit organizations with foreign residents to following up on complaints and problems faced by foreign residents to building and monitoring relationships with the consulates and embassies of foreign countries. She searches for bilingual foreign residents who can be appointed to municipal committees address a wide range of issues in the municipality of Los Cabos. In fact, she will work to help foreign residents with almost any problem that they may be facing.

Nohemi’s last role was to introduce Juan Pablo (JP) Loza, the owner and chef of Senora Cocina Casa y Cantina, who provided an overview of his vision of the restaurant. A brunch was available for attendees.
