Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico. However, for Liz and Ted Mitchell, owners of Todos Santos Brewing, it is a real reason for celebration. May 5th is Liz’s birthday, Ted and Liz’s anniversary, and Ted’s mother’s birthday. So many reasons to party. So, Todos Santos Brewing was transformed into a place for a country Hoedown. Pescadero 62, a BBQ restaurant set up their smoker and grill outside the front of the restaurant offering BBQ ribs, grilled half chickens, potato salad and more to support the party. Ted, Liz, and the staff of Todos Santos Brewing were all dressed in cowboy regalia – hats, boots, and shirts. The music from Ted and Two Notch Road was all classic country. There was even line dancing staged and practiced by all the ladies from Todos Santos Zumba class. Last but not least there were two competitions for the best dressed horse and the horse with the best agility routine (Hobby Horses, that is).
Liz had set a tight schedule to make sure that all the events planned for the evening happened on time. The evening started with Ted Mitchell and his guitar entertaining the audience with country tunes. Before starting, Ted announced that he would play three songs and then expected the audience to all shout “More Ted” and he would perform his encore tune. Liz introduced him and said that it was not often that she could get him to sing for the house.
While we were waiting for the entertainment to begin Beth went out front and order the BBQ ribs with potato salad. We ordered our drinks – Bitchin Blonde beer for me, LimonadaMinerale for Beth, and a Jamaica with tequila for Chava, our daughter. The meat fell off the bones of the ribs and the potato salad was delicious.
Ted started his set at about 6:15 pm. Two Notch Road (Patrick Jeffords on guitar and Lucas Bennett on bass guitar and percussion) followed them with lots of great classic country hits and several original tunes. At 7:00, the line dancing started. Everyone was amazed as about a dozen women led the room in four different line dances, perfectly choreographed. Two Notch Road once again took the stage until about 8:20 when the show horse competition began. Six horse riders brought their steeds to the front of the room and showed off their ability to ride and dance with their hobby horses. The audience was asked to vote on each competitor and horse by cheering and clapping, narrowing down the field until the rider with the best routine was chosen and then the best horse in show was selected.
It was a great party. The crowd got up to dance to the music and everyone was hugging Liz and wishing her happy birthday. We left about 9:00 pm to drive back to San Jose del Cabo, while the party continued.
