Lots of children in Los Cabos go hungry each day. Organizations like Feeding Los Cabos Kids and Sarahuaro try to remedy this problem by funding and staffing kitchens in the poorest colonias in Los Cabos. Today was the 5th Anniversary of the Kendrick Kitchen at a local elementary school in north Cabo San Lucas near the Cabo San Lucas airport. Three couples – Sherri and Ken Burgess, Tod and Rhonda Peckham and Fred Runde and his ex-wife Kristy Runde – provided the original funding to build the kitchen, with concrete picnic tables on the grounds of the school. Local volunteers make a nutritious breakfast and feed the school children to help make sure that they can focus on learning throughout the day. For some, this is the only meal that they will have.
The 5th anniversary celebration provided recognition to the principal of the school, who supports the program as well as the staff of Sarahuaro Foundation, who help manage the programs. Fred and Kristy Runde were in attendance along with representatives of Sarahuaro – Edith Vizcarra (Executive Director) and Marco Guzman (Finance Director), Maria del Carmen Sanchez Aguilar (Program Director) and Nancy Brelos (Chairwoman of the Board).
What was most exciting was seeing the young children stream from their classes at 10:00 to have a healthy breakfast. The children went up to the window of the kitchen and took their plate full of food to the concrete picnic tables in front of the kitchen. The ate and cheered for the people who were helping to make this a part of their daily lives.
Sarahuaro does much more than just feed children at school. The organization provides counseling and educational programs for the women and mothers of the children. Through its educational program supporting both women and children, the Sarahuaro Foundation hopes to fight poverty in the poorest areas of Los Cabos.
