LA BARRICA TAPAS AND WINE

John Anderson, Editor

Located in the Koral Center on the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas is a relatively new restaurant La Barrica Tapas and Wine. The restaurant has seating both inside and outside in the upper plaza of the Mercado. We chose an outside table and Valeria, our server provided us with menus and asked what we would like to drink. Chris chose a local Bohema beer, I ordered a glass of their special sauvignon blanc and the ladies had a limonada mineral and water.

The restaurants wine and menu are inspired by traditional Spanish dishes. Valeria brought us two small bowls of olives and cheese with toothpicks to nibble while reviewing the menu. The menu includes a number of tapas – Pan Tomate, Anchovies, Smoked Salmon and more – three salads, a number of appetizers – croquestas, shrimp meatballs, clams rockefeller – main courses – shrimp, New York steak, chicken, Angus medallions, paella and a hamburger and desserts.

I decided to try one of their tapas – the smoked salmon – and Beth ordered the Caesar salad (without the parmesan cheese) as appetizers. For the main course, Chris chose the hamburger. Tracey selected the House Salad with mixed organic greens, feta cheese, olives, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, beet, mixed berries and served with honey and citric dressing. Beth ordered the Shrimp Tempura fried and served with house mayonnaise and roasted nuts. I decided on the Solomillo – Angus medallions served with cheese and tomato creamed rice.

For dessert we decided to try the Churros mixed with cinnamon and sugar served with vanilla icecream, chocolate sauce and compote. The five warm churros were served in a small La Barrica Cart placed on the table. Very novel and very good.

The flavors of all of the dishes were excellent. The chef, Ivan Alvarez had done an amazing job. Valeria was a very attentive and pleasant server answering all of our questions and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We will be back.
