Exploring Todos Santos downtown one afternoon, I walked along Heroico Colegio Militar, the street parallel to Benito Juarez (the main street) stopping in at the different stores that I encountered. This small gallery La Sonrisa de la Muerta (The Smile of Death) is a space for the production and exhibition of graphic art. La Sonrisa opened its doors in 2014, founded by Cedric Volon, a Belgian graphic designer and visual artist. The gallery primarily features the work of Mexican artists, but also includes pieces by some international artists. In late 2015, Saskia Onvlee, a visual artist specializing in graphic arts, and Carlos Domin, a photographer and filmmaker, both Argentinian, committed to continuing the work already begun but raised the bar for the project, expanding the space to include a graphic production workshop and adding the work of emerging and established artists to the visual offering. With the addition of the workshop, they created an opportunity to offer the local community and visitors a space for ongoing exchange and learning.

The small gallery has a number of spaces exhibiting a wide range of graphic art. There are colorful pieces featuring abstracts and images of traditional birds and creatures of mythical Mexico. There is also a room featuring fabric art and clothing. It is an interesting place to explore – especially if you are looking for unique images with a Mexican theme for your home or business.
