A complete renovation of two lots on Lito Hill (now Terrazas de Costa Azul) is underway to create a combination event space and small art colony – Casa Chabela. The property was originally a Bed & Breakfast called Casa Terracotta owned and operated by Robert and Sharon Ruyg with four casitas and an outdoor kitchen. The property of a tropical paradise with plants and trees throughout the property. When it was sold about 20 years ago a house was added to the front of the property. April Rosenberg and her brother are completely transforming the property into a modern, up-to-date facility where guests can learn pottery, painting in four art studios, or hold outdoor events. With a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen and bathroom, two casitas, and four art studios, the property is almost ready for its launch. The one-bedroom house has also been converted into a three-bedroom home with a large, modern kitchen for guests and events. Terraces have been added, with retaining walls on the sloping properties, providing a number of outdoors spaces with great views of the Sea of Cortez that can be used for events or just relaxing. Entry from the street is on the edge of the house with an entry into the living room, dining room and kitchen or a walkway to the first terrace, where there are entrances to two of the three bedrooms (the main bedroom is on the second floor of the house). From this terrace stairs lead down the swimming pool another terrace and the walkway down to the outdoor kitchen and bar. In front of this area is another terrace with great views of the Sea of Cortez. Following past the outdoor kitchen areas leads to two of the original casitas, the second one, is being transformed into a pottery studio. Around the back of this casita is the new art studio area with four studios and a large patio area in front.
The new owner also purchased the lot in front of the original Casa Terra Cotta property, which is where a full garden is planted and which provides access to the property from the street below.
Having known Casa Terra Cotta very well, it was a treat to see how the property is being transformed. Stay tuned as we will let you know when Casa Chabela is ready to open as a studio and event space.
