Salvatore G’s in Cabo San Lucas with Mike & Michelle

John Anderson, Editor

Beside Mexican food, there are quite a few good Italian restaurants in Cabo San Lucas – Alcaravea Gourmet, Romeo y Julieta, Il Forno, La Dolce Ristorante, Invita Bistro, JM Italian Steakhouse and Salvatore G’s. We recently went with friends from Colorado to Salvatore G’s. They are now so busy that there are two-hour reservation blocks – 4:00, 6:00 and 8:00 pm – and it is essential to have a reservation.

The family that own the restaurant are from Oregon. Started by the father, Salvatore, the restaurant is now run by the two sons. Located in the Siesta Suites Hotel on Calle Emiliano Zapata between Guerrero and Miguel Hidalgo, one block north of the Tesoro Hotel, Salvatore G’s (G stands for Galluzzo) has been in Cabo San Lucas for 15 years. With seating in both a lower and upper dining area, the restaurant can handle quite a few guests. In fact, they added quite a few seats in the fall of 2002 by removing the pool and reducing it to a fountain in the middle of the main dining area.

The menu is extensive with all of your favorite Italian dishes and more. But what you really need to know is that the portions are HUGE. While they warn you of this, most people end up going home with another full meal from what they are unable to finish at the restaurant. Our server delivered a small loaf of freshly baked bread to our table with butter, and I ordered some Chardonnay to start of the evening. We all decided to have some appetizers. Beth and I shared a Caesar Salad – with the fresh sliced parmesan on the side for me. Michele ordered the Spinach and Pear Medley salad with gorgonzola, chopped walnuts and pancetta along with the sliced pear. Mike went for the stuffed mushroom – stuffed with scallops, sea bass and shrimp. As it was described as a single jumbo mushroom, boy was he surprised at the size. I had warned him everything was huge (it was two more meals at the Townhouse).

For main courses, Beth ordered the Tony Soprano’s Special – three large meatballs over spaghetti. I ordered the Chicken Risotto with mushrooms in a light garlic parmigiano sauce. Mike ordered the Mama’s Sunday Gravy with home-made meatballs, Italian sausage, herb roasted pork and braised beef Bolognese sauce over spaghetti. Michele chose the Shrimp Scampi with gluten free pasta. As was predicted, we all went home with a to-go box for our entrées.

I had warned everyone to save room for dessert. So we ordered some tiramisu and chocolate mousse to share. The meal was fantastic, the service great and the atmosphere wonderful. So if you love Italian food, Salvatore G’s is worth a visit while you are in Cabo San Lucas. BUT consider sharing everything with your partner!
