Carlos de la Cruz Custom Jeweler in The Art District in San Jose del Cabo

When our friend Michele was planning to visit from Colorado, she asked if we knew a jeweler who could create something from some old jewelry that she had. Beth had used Carlos de la Cruz on Alvaro Obregon in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo across from Mi Casa Restaurant a few times. For Carlos de la Cruz, jewelry is a family tradition. With a grandfather and father who are jewelers, he started to learn his trade at 11 years old. He worked with his father, his cousins and others to learn at a young age. He learned how to make his own tools, create his own lost wax molds and heat and mold silver with a blow torch rather than a laser heating tool.

Coming from Puerta Vallarta to Cabo San Lucas, Carlos began his career here working with a jeweler who was a friend of his father. Within a workshop, it was his job to create the designs for other jewelers. He continued this tradition with his move to San Jose del Cabo, often working to create the jewelry for major retailers in the area like Sanchez Jewelers. As the pieces that were commissioned from him often sold quickly, Carlos decided that it was time to move from a workshop jeweler, creating works for others to having his own retail location. With the help of a friend, the two renovated his small workshop space on the main street (Alvaro Obregon) in the Art District in downtown San Jose into a retail space.

Michele had a ring with lots of small diamonds that she wanted made into a necklace. Beth had some old gold that she wanted made into some small stud earrings that could be worn every day. The two met with Carlos and outlined what they wanted. He took a few days, did some sketches, and came up with designs for the lady’s approval. As the time was short – less than a week – Carlos worked quickly to finish the project and met with them at 8:00 pm on Sunday night – the day before Michele was to return to Denver – to deliver the items.

For the necklace, Carlos had to source some additional diamonds of the same size and quality to fill it out and find a chain of the length and quality that Michele wanted for the necklace. For Beth, it was a matter of melting down the gold and making a mold to create the small stud earrings and their backings.

Both women were delighted with the results. Carlos is not only a custom jeweler but has quite a few different items in his small retail shop in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo. He is there from about 3:00 to 9:00 pm each day.
