Casa Calavera at Vidanta in San Jose del Cabo

The trip from valet parking at the front door takes you through a lighted tunnel, past the bar surrounded by pools, near the OMNI Day Spa and through a long hallway to be greeted by a host. This beachfront restaurant within the Hotel Vidanta is styled after the Day of the Dead. With iconic artwork over the walls, there is seating in a lounge, at the bar, indoor dining and dining on the beach.

The restaurant provides an extensive menu of Mexican dishes including appetizers, guacamoles in different styles, salads, tacos, burritos, fajitas and enchiladas as well as chicken, steak and fresh fish entrées. We ordered classic guacamole to start, which came with tortilla chips and four different additional salsas. Then we shared a Caesar Salad that came with sliced avocado and a delicious Caesar dressing. Beth ordered the chicken fajitas and I ordered the special mushroom burrito (tacos are served with corn tortillas and burritos with flour tortillas). All of the food was excellent.

While full, we still decided to try one of Casa Calavera’s unique signature desserts – La Calavera. This is a white chocolate skull with strawberry sorbet in the middle. The server pours hot melted chocolate over the skull, which melts to reveal the delights inside. The restaurant has 1980s rock and metal music playing through its speakers during the evening. Quite a few reviewers noted that this was somewhat inconsistent with the Mexican style of the restaurant.
