If you are not a fisherman or golfer, you are probably coming to Los Cabos to surf. The region has a wide range of surf breaks on both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. Surfers have been coming to Los Cabos in the summer and sleeping on the beaches long before the region was a year-round tourist destination. Many of the world’s greatest surfers moved here either full or part time. Even though Mike Doyle has passed, you can still see surfers like Mickey “The Mongoose” Munoz or Gerry Lopez walking the beaches or surfing the breaks of the East Cape.
There are a number of places San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Pescadero and Todos Santos to rent or buy equipment and clothing. One of our previous stories on the Pescadero Surf Camp showed pictures of their equipment room with all of the different sizes of boards, wet suits and more. One of the alternatives in San Jose del Cabo is Desert Barrels Surf Shop. I had the opportunity to chat with the owner, Daniela DeBerge recently to learn more about her, the business and its history.
Desert Barrels was a dream of hers since she started working in surf shops at the age of 9. Partly as a result, she became a surf photographer in the early 2000’s and the idea for Desert Barrels was born from a photograph she took at Elias Calles, BCS. Standing atop her truck shooting the huge swell, she was struck by the realization that this is the only place in Mexico where you can find the combination of desert and barrels. She started Desert Barrels Surf Shop in May 2010, and had the shop’s grand opening in August of the same year.
Desert Barrels Surf Shop in located in the small plaza behind La Comer in San Jose del Cabo (just beside the OXXO). For more information on Desert Barrels Surf Shop visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/desertbarrelssurfshop or at their website at https://www.desertbarrels.com/
