Last year when I asked Ezra Katz, the artist what restaurants we should try in Todos Santos, his first suggestion was Dum. Dum had participated in both Sabor a Cabo and Gastrovino Baja where I had the chance to sample a little of their food. So, when I need a place to meet Sharon Katz, the South African musician, singer, and social activist in Todos Santos, I suggest that we have lunch at Dum. It was not easy to find as it is at the end of Centenario on a dirt road, which runs parallel to Benito Juarez, the main street of Todos Santos. The road ends in the lower parking lot of Docecuarenta.
When I finally found it, the sign said Rancho Corazon. I walked into the property and was stunned. It is so beautiful. Set among the trees are a bar, a stage, a swimming pool, and tables spread around in an incredibly beautiful setting. I was led to a table not far from the outdoor bar and told the host that I was waiting for a guest. While I was waiting for Sharon, I walked around the property taking photos.
When Sharon arrived, our server gave us the menu and asked if we would like anything to drink. I was a special lunch and so I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and Sharon joined me. They served us a H Head High Chardonnay, which it turns out is from Sonoma County, California where my favorite Chardonnays are from. At the same time, we were provided with an eggplant amuse bouche with crispy crackers and bread. Not generally, an eggplant fan, I was extremely pleased with the flavor of this little treat. For lunch, I ordered the beef carpaccio, which was served with truffle mayo, capers, lemon, olive oil, and French fries. It was amazing and portion was so large that asked for about half to go. Sharon had the Catch of the Day, which was sea bass and was served with potatoes, a stack of vegetable and olives. She said that it was excellent. As our meal was ending, we had the chance to meet the chef – Aurelian Legeay – to learn more about the restaurant – a place where Sharon would really like to perform.
The overall experience was amazing. The setting is stunning. The food, presentation and service were excellent. I will definitely be going back with Beth for dinner in the near future.
