Todos Santos is one of the major centers of art in Baja California Sur. There are a large number of galleries and artisan stores throughout the downtown area of Todos Santos. One of those galleries is dedicated to the plain airy style paintings of Ezra Katz. Born in Texas, Erza’s parents moved to La Paz when he was only three months old. His passion for art was seen very early in life and from the time that he was young (only 7 years old), his parents would have art tutors come from Mexico City to spend the summer giving him art lessons. When the time for college came, Ezra studied art and then commercial art at the University of Texas in Austin and Corpus Christi.
His passion for art also is for the culture and life of Mexico. Living more than half the year in Todos Santos (the other in northern California), the subjects of his painting are often the streets, people, vistas and life in this area. People familiar with Ezra’s artwork will not only recognize his style but his love of a seafoam green VW van. His colors are reminiscent of the skies, sunrise and sunsets over the Pacific.
His more recent works have included more animals and people than in the recent past. Having seen a few of the works in progress online, I decided it was time to make another visit to his gallery. I was not disappointed. To be fair, I am a fan and own three of his paintings.
