Located just off Jose Maria Morelos in the Art District of San Jose del Cabo is a unique restaurant – H Garden Venue. Only open for the high season, Chef Luis Herrera and his father Luis have been offering amazing food in San Jose del Cabo for 20 years. Previously, they had H Bistro around the corner – an Italian and European Style Restaurant. But Chef Luis’ father wanted to partially retire and so they renovated and opened H Garden Venue to offer unique family-style dinners on Wednesday to Friday, with free corkage so their guests could bring their own wine.
We wanted to offer our friends Chris and Tracey from England a unique experience during their visit to Los Cabos. We were lucky to be the last group to enjoy the family style meal at H Garden Venue for the Spring 2026 season. We were greeted at the door by Chef Luis. As we were the only diners on this last night, Luis was playing both host and chef. He had set a big table for us in the center of the garden space with amazing table clothes with the H logo embroider on them and on the napkins. The dishes, silverware and glasses all looked beautiful on the table.
The meal started with fresh warm rolls with butter and a clove of garlic. The menu for this family-style meal was themed From Paris to Manhattan. It started with a Carrot Soup that looked much like French Onion soup with bread, cheese and creme fraiche on top. The creamy soup was delicious. The second course was a Mixed Green Salad with carrots, butter lettuce, cucumber and tomato in a honey-mustard vinaigrette dressing. Another winner. Each of us received a large bowl of the salad. The third course was breaded Fish Cakes with fish, lobster and shrimp in a garlic, aioli and roasted red pepper sauce. They were delicious with one large cake for each of us. The fourth course (by this time we are getting full and had been putting a few things aside to take home) was Roasted Chicken with sautéed mushrooms and Brussel sprouts in a green peppercorn sauce. Tracy loves Brussel sprouts and so she was grabbing them from the two large platters that were served to us. Chef Luis also placed a large bowl of Yukon mashed potatoes in the center of the table. What a delightful course! All of the plates and silverware were changed for the second half of the fourth course – sliced steak with asparagus in a sauce of Parmigiano Reggiano béchamel and lemon zest. The steak was cooked to perfection and placed on a large platter for us to share (more to take home at the end). By this time, we could barely move – each course had been plentiful, delicious, and flavorful. After a break and a little more of the chardonnay that we had brought with us, the final course was served – a crisp apple puff pastry with vanilla ice cream and a berry sauce.
If you have never experienced the food at H Garden Venue, or from Chef Luis (who is a private chef on his days not in the restaurant), you are missing one of the best culinary experiences available in Los Cabos. Chef Luis loves to cook. In fact, he told us that he had be toying with a new restaurant idea for some time, which he plans to launch for the summer of 2026. He has been renovating the adjoining space to H Garden and opening a lunch restaurant that will offer four different sandwiches, featuring different flavors and the choice of four different French fries to accompany them. It is called H Steakhouse with steakhouse-style sandwiches described as “tradition, class and timeless flavor – made the right way.” We can’t wait to try it later is this month (May) or early in June. Congratulations, Chef Luis.
