Vista La Ribera - A Boutique Hotel on the way to Cabo Pulmo

John Anderson, Editor

James Dobies is from Southern California and is an avid surfer.  His first trips to Los Cabos were in the early 1980s but he still goes in the water every day – whether swimming or surfing.  James worked at a golf course in California and when it went bankrupt, he decided to move to Pescadero, south of Todos Santos in 1996 (now a Mexican citizen).  At that time the land at Cerritos Beach was not for sale and could not be individually titled and so the closest place that he could buy was outside Pescadero where he built and still operates the Pescadero Surf Camp.

In those early days, before there was anything on the beach in Cerritos, he had a small palapa and would rent surfboards to tourists.  The Pescadero Surf Camp was built from scratch and now offers visitors the choice of camping or renting one of their casitas.  The property has a pool, outdoor kitchen, and of course, surfboards to rent.

James’ entrance into the real estate industry was because as the properties on Cerritos Beach were able to be titled, people in the local area asked for his help.  He started a Pescadero Real Estate Company with a friend in 2006 and then went out on his own, and was licensed as a Broker with Los Cerritos Properties in 2011.  Because his family grew up in Pescadero, James became integrated into the community.  He knows who to contact and work with to get things done.  Later, he partnered with Dylcor Construction in Pescadero to offer buy-and-build options for his clients.  James is very clear that his focus is on Pescador and Cerritos only.  He does not list or sell real estate in Cabo San Lucas or Todos Santos.  He also indicated that given the idiosyncrasies of Cerritos and Pescadero, real estate agents from outside of the area will often rely on him for his in-depth knowledge of the local market.

Because of his long history in Cerritos and Pescadero, Dobies knows every piece of land and property owner in the area that might be available.  He is one of the few people who has been able to contact landowners and combine five or six adjacent lots into larger properties for development.  James sold many of the beachfront properties where resorts like the Cerritos Surf Town Hotel and Spa and the Desert Moon are located.  One of his sons is also a Mexican attorney, which helps in addressing any issues that may arise in the purchase or titling of properties in the area.  He is currently working on creating some new developments in the area.

James was kind enough to offer a series of historical pictures of Cabo San Lucas in the early 80s and Cerritos Beach and the location of the Pescadero Surf Camp in the mid-90s.  This shows how much the region has changed in 30 to 40 years.
