Known as a taco and mezcal house, La Lupita is located on Jose Maria Morales in the Art District of San Jose del Cabo – between Baja Brewing and Chamuyo. The restaurant has three separate rooms for seating – two indoors and the largest back patio has a bar and raised stage for live music. We had a reservation to meet our friends Ethan and Lesley there to celebrate his birthday – one day late. One of Ethan’s close friends, Larry from New Jersey had flown in for the weekend to celebrate with Ethan.
Seated a a large round table in the first room from the front door, the first thing that our server Ivan brought to the table was the alcohol menu. Ethan and Larry wanted to try a very smooth mezcal. Ivan provided a recommendation and soon returned with set ups, the bottle of mezcal and a description of how and where it was produced and the best way to experience it. In the meantime, the rest of us were looking at the menu and we ordered guacamole and miso clams as appetizers while Larry and Ethan had their mezcal lesson and experience.
The food menu has the longest and most exotic selection of tacos of anyplace in Los Cabos. It provided a lot of different choices for people to have. Beth ordered the Mexican Flank Steak Taco which comes with yellow corn, potatoes and crispy leek, arugula and a macha sauce (see said no cheese). Lesley ordered two of the different shrimp tacos – Chipotle Shrimp and Taco Guero with tempura shrimp. Ethan selected three tacos – Traditional Beef Tongue, Braised Pork and the tempura shrimp Taco with curry. Larry and I both ordered the Bean Soup as an appetizer and agreed that the bean soup at The Hangman was better. For an entrée, Larry chose a Pork Belly Taco a Drunken Barbacoa Taco (lamb). I ordered a Mexican “Milanesa” Style Taco and the Mushroom Chicharron Taco.
Before our dinner, everyone was served a small cup of fish soup. Ivan and Yo Jan, his serving partner brought us all of our tacos, water for everyone, and silence fell over the table as we were devouring these delicious tacos. There were no complaints about the wide range of flavors that the tacos represented. Each of the tacos had multiple additional ingredients (see the menu in photos) that added great flavors.
Since it was Ethan’s belated birthday, Ivan brought a traditional Mexican flan with a candle and Ivan and Yo Jan led us in a round of Happy Birthday as Ethan blew out the candle.
The team that served us was incredible – friendly, funny, and full of information about the mezcals and tacos. The tacos speak for themselves. As we were in the first room, we really couldn’t experience the live music from the band but the stage and set were pretty amazing. Definitely worth a visit.
