LA MAREA

Located in Plaza Peninsula with District MX and Pan Springs, La Marea (The Tide) was impacted dramatically by the construction of the roundabout in San Jose del Cabo. In the early months, access to the plaza was often shut down several times a day. The continuing line up of traffic to San Jose del Cabo has also convinced many local residents living in Querencia, Palmilla and similar communities to drive south for shopping and dinner rather than north.

Four of us recently went for an early dinner at La Marea. We arrived and a server opened the door and asked where we wanted to sit. The restaurant only had three tables occupied. La Marea has seating outside and on two levels inside. We chose a large table for four against the wall, with comfortable couch-like seating against the wall. The server asked what we would like to drink and a beer, glass of Pinot Grigio, sparking water and diet Coke were requested. We were provided with menus (English on one side and Spanish on the other). While we reviewed the menu, the table received two bowls of tortilla chips and small bowls of Pico de Gallo.

We started by ordering appetizers – a Caesar Salad, a Fruit Salad, and six oysters Rockefeller. Beth like the dressing on the Caesar and Mike said that the oysters were done perfectly. We ordered a variety of main courses: Michele chose the catch-of-the-day with a Rosemary sauce; Mike the Seafood Pasta with fresh tomato sauce; Beth the Breaded Shrimp and; I chose the Sesame Crusted Tuna. The shrimp and fish dishes were served with rice and fresh vegetables. Mike loved his pasta and said that the octopus was cooked perfectly that was included with the shrimp on the pasta. Michele and Beth both like their dishes, saying that they were fresh and very good. Unfortunately, my tuna was very chewy suggesting that it may not have been fresh.

Overall, the food was good, the service was very attentive and the atmosphere comfortable. It seems that it may be worthwhile just to ask the server about the freshness of the items selected.
