Located on the frontage road across from Fresko and Home Depot near the road down to the Cape Boutique Hotel is a unique restaurant and bar – La Puerta Vieja. Named after its 130-year-old doors, La Puerta Vieja has been open since 2003. Entering the building, a sign is in place announcing that it is also a boutique hotel. The restaurant is accessed by an elevator that takes you to the third floor. Leaving the elevator, there is a small host stand with the bar straight ahead and shelves of spirit bottles and display cases of jewelry to the right. But, the first thing that you notice is the view of Lands End and the harbor in Cabo San Lucas. On the day of our visit, there was a large cruise ship in the harbor.
There was a very large group set up on the left side of the bar with a five-piece mariachi band playing for them. The host asked us if we would like to sit on that floor near the open view of the harbor or go up a half level to another seating area, which would be a little quieter. We chose to go up to the next level where five tables were placed with another great view. And the view only got better as the sun started to set over Lands End.
Our server introduced himself and brought us the menus for food and cocktails. He asked what we would like to drink and Beth chose a sparkling water and I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and a house water. Another server then came by to show us the lobster that was available and to describe the fresh seafood specials of the night – snapper or seared or blackened tuna. Reviewing the menu, Beth immediately saw the lobster bisque served in a bread bowl – her appetizer choice. I selected the Caesar Salad, which was served in a fried cheese bowl. The dressing was fantastic with just the right combination of the flavors of anchovy and garlic. We both enjoyed our appetizers very much.
For our main courses, Beth ordered the Shrimp in a butter and garlic sauce, which was served with grilled vegetables and a puréed cauliflower. I decided on the special seared tuna, which was also served with grilled vegetables and a puréed cauliflower. The portions were large and the flavors of each dish excellent. We both loved the puréed cauliflower. In fact, the portions were large enough that we both took more than half of our meals home. We were asked if we would like one of their desserts, but we were too full to try this time.
La Puerta Vieja also offers a 10% discount for local residents, making the price of the meal even more affordable. It was a great meal, with an incredible view and excellent service
