During a recent visit to Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo, we went into Plaza Sr. Chavez to look at the metal sculptures of Juan Sotomayor. This is the plaza next to the mission near Plaza Mijares that also has Casa Martin San Jose del Cabo. I. was also looking for a new wallet and went into Leather and Silver in the plaza. The store has artisanal leather goods on the two main walls and jewelry displayed in both cases set in the middle of the store and back wall. The back wall features primarily silver jewelry.

The leather goods range from belts of all sizes to a wide variety of men’s wallets, briefcases, women’s wallets, hand bags, larger bags with contemporary and traditional designs. I was approached by the sales person, who turned out to be the owner, Julian Alonzo Dominguez to see if I needed some help. I showed him my wallet and told him that I wanted something that would fit all of my cards and still could be put in my front pocket. As he showed me the alternatives, I asked him about the business. He indicated that he was a jewelry designer and that all of the silver was from Taxco and met the highest standards. The leather goods were produced by his family at a factory in San Jose del Cabo. He was proud of the traditional designs of some of the bags.

After looking at the range of wallets available, I choose one that was a trifold with a flap in the middle that would hold all of my identification and credit cards. It was made of very high-quality leather. While I was in the shop, several women made purchases of jewelry. One woman like a ring very much but it needed to be sized. Julian said, “as a jewelry I can resize it for you in 20 minutes.” She bought it.

It was a very interesting store with great products in Plaza Sr. Chavez across from Plaza Mijares down the street from the San Jose del Cabo mission.
