Our friend Mike from Colorado likes whole fish during his visit with us in Los Cabos. I couldn’t think of anywhere better to take him than Los Kurricanes at La Posada del Pescador in Cabo San Lucas. The main reason for this is that Juan and Lupita also have had Pescaderia Cabo Mar for 26 years in the same location. Juan is the fisherman and Lupita runs the business. Everything that is displayed and for sale in the Pescaderia is fresh from the day before at most (except some of the shellfish). I checked with Lupita to make sure that they had whole fish available and off we went to dinner at Los Kurricanes.
Los Kurricanes normally closes at 5:00 pm (although it will start to be open for dinner sometime in November). However, this day they had a private party for the fifth anniversary of staff of IPACSA, so Lupita said we could come later. While we looked at the menu, everyone really knew what they wanted. The table was offered tortilla chips and a tuna dip to start.
Mike saw that they had an octopus ceviche and so he started with that and gobbled it down. For the main course, he ordered the whole fish (a snapper) with a garlic sauce grilled and salad and rice. Michele and I all had the catch of the day filet – sea bass – with different sides. Beth chose the deep-fried shrimp as her main course. The kitchen has a whole range of both hot and cold sides – salad, potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salads, beans, mashed potatoes and more – and you can choose two to add to your meal.
When the food arrived Mike and Michele were in shock. The platters are huge and there is actually enough food that you can take half of the entrée home for lunch the next day. There are several different preparations available on the fish filet, but we all chose the garlic but with different sides. We finished off our meal with a homemade flan to share.
The food was incredible, the service excellent, the atmosphere cool – with a huge saltwater aquarium – and the restaurant is priced for locals rather than tourists. This is truly a place that you don’t want to miss for fresh fish.
