Ozzy’s Beach Bar La Fortuna

John Anderson, Editor

La Fortuna has recently become a center for food and drink on the East Cape. Starting with Zai Sushi Surf Bar, followed by Shade, Lateral La Fortuna, a weekend bar and a bus serving hamburgers, the newest addition is Ozzy’s Beach Bar. Named after Jason Manning’s (the sushi chef at Zai Sushi) dog, Ozzy and built by Jay Manning, one of the best contractors on the East Cape. Located in front of Zai Sushi, Ozzy’s Beach Bar has a huge palapa with a bar under it as well as tables and seating with views of the surf break at La Fortuna.

Carrying on the tradition of Zai Sushi, the cocktail menu has drinks named after neighborhoods, dogs and places on the East Cape as well as some well-known cocktails. On the west side of the palapa is a stage for live entertainment. From time to time, Ozzy’s has tacos catered from a local provider. During our visit, the homegrown band from our old neighborhood – The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos – were playing joined by Dan from Extra Large on keyboards. Josh (guitar and vocals), Tim (guitar and vocals) and Chris do a great job with both original tunes and classics.

It was our first time to visit. The construction of the palapa is amazing with Jay’s signature wood-look pillars. The furniture is both incredibly well build and very comfortable. The view of the Sea of Cortez, the surf break at La Fortuna and the sunset are beautiful.

We had a great time, meeting some old friends from the East Cape and listening to The Lost Dogs. We tried the tacos but would probably recommend that you eat at one of the other great restaurants and enjoy Ozzy’s as the beach bar that it is.
