PEZ GORDO GALLERY THE SHOPPES AT PALMILLA

John Anderson, Editor

Pez Gordo Gallery celebrated its 25th Anniversary on April 11th, 2025. The Gallery original opened on Alvaro Obregon, the main gallery street in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo. When The Shoppes at Palmilla opened in 2005, Pez Gordo moved to this new shopping area. The owners, Dana Lieb, Fernanda Reyes, and Jimena Garcia work hard to find the best art from local artists, artists from mainland Mexico, and even a few artists from the United States to meet the interests of their clientele. Uzziel Sanchez and Wilbur Sanchez organize the artworks in the gallery and do all of the installations at client homes.

Finding artwork to match the interests of the diverse resident base of Los Cabos is a constant challenge. A stroll through the gallery makes any customer aware of the wide range of option available to them to complement the style and decoration fo their home. Given the diversity of architecture in Los Cabos, it calls for a great diversity in artwork. Pez Gordo Gallery offers bright Mexican style paintings, contemporary and modern works, sculptures, multi-media works, line drawings, fabric artwork, and even Huichol beaded art, ranging from small traditional animals and beaded Claze Azul bottles to two and three-foot-high Huichol sculptures. If you don’t see exactly what you want on the walls, or sitting on the floor or display pieces there are about 10 pull-out racks with artwork on each side. The artwork also ranges in size to adorn the smallest or the largest space in your home.

Over 40 artists are represented in the Pez Gordo Gallery. Some of the local artists include: Hugo Ortega, Hugo Aguilar,Macarena Miranda, Carrie Marill, Esther Burboa and Arturo Mendoza. From outside Baja some of the artists include: Jose Cacho, David Roy, Enrique Ortiz, Chango Mohar, Magaly Sanchez, and Lorena Fenton.

While Pez Gordo Gallery’s customers come from all over Los Cabos, many are from upscale developments like Palmilla, Chileno, Querencia, Diamante, and Pedregal. But Dana Lieb stressed that the nicest thing was that many of their customers have become friends over the years and just drop into the gallery to chat. Pez Gordo Gallery and its owners are also big supporters of the community, regularly donating art to help raise funds for charities and important groups. While I was visiting, they were planning which artwork they should offer to the Bomberos for an upcoming auction.

When I asked what was the most exciting thing in the future, Dana said “The arrival of Fernanda’s baby!”
