Shooter Ford at Shaka’s Cantina in Cerritos

John Anderson, Editor

Shaka’s Cantina has truly become one of the major places for music in the Cerritos, Pescadero and Todos Santos region. The restaurant built a stage with sound and lights under the palapa and has a least one live entertainment event a week. As country music is unusual in the Baja, we decided to go up for the show accompanied by our friends Bill and Tanya. Bill is the road and production manager for the James Barker Band, one of Canada’s leading country groups. Another of the Canadian country artists which he has worked, Gord Bamford had just performed at Shaka’s, so Bill was interested in learning more about the venue.

Of course, music is not the only reason to go to Shaka’s, the food is also great. After taking a look at the menu, Beth and I decided to share the potato skins, Bill ordered jalapeno poppers and Tanya, the homemade potato chips. It was a great way to start along with our drinks. For main courses, Beth ordered the beef dip; Tanya, the chicken-fried steak; Bill, the huge chorizo dog and; I had my regular, the red chili. The portions are plentiful, and the food is consistently good.

Both the inside and outside of Shaka’s Delicious Wood Cantina was packed to listen to Shooter Ford, a country star from La Paz. Shooter performed country hits from a wide range of both traditional and modern country artists. When he took his first break, there was a show by a fire juggler out in the outdoor seating area, near the fire pit. Shaka’s also has a store with their merchandise as well as fabrics and other items for sale. That night, a jewelry designer was showing her creations in the outside area too.

Shaka’s is always dog friendly and so you can meet may pups there. It was a great evening and we thanked Brando, one of the owners and Liiroi, who is in charge of the music for our visit.

This Saturday (February 10th, 2024) at Shaka’s The Andrew Cole Band will be on Stage. Andrew Cole sings for Robbie Krieger’s Doors. Last year when he performed, the place was packed. So check it out.
