SOLAR SUNDAY CASA DEL ESTE IN PLAYA TORTUGA

John Anderson, Editor

Just after the pavement ends on the East Cape Road toward Shipwrecks is a beautiful home on the Sea of Cortez name Casa del Este. The walled property has double gates for the driveway and a separate entry gate from the large parking area at the front of the property. Walking into the property, there is a large planted area before the entrance to the house and the four-car garage. Innovacion Solar created a solar system to meet all of the needs of the home, which includes a significant air conditioning system with central air in the living room and dining room area of the home.

The initial installation included 80 SunPower 450 W panels providing a total potential of 36 kW of solar energy per hour. The panels were installed on a patented anodized aluminum racking system. The solar equipment room off of the garage is cooled by a mini-split to ensure the most effective performance of the batteries. Three Sol-Ark 15 kW Inverters help to convert the solar energy to electricity to operate the house, including a large swimming pool on the beach side of the property and to charge the Pyte lithium-ion batteries providing storage. Initially, three battery-management cabinets were installed with four Pyte’s lithium-ion batteries with 5.12 kW storage each in each of the cabinets. This provided a total of 61.44 kW of storage for the home. The initial installation was last October and in May an additional two cabinets of Pyte lithium-ion batteries were installed, increasing the overall storage capacity to 102.4 kW.

In addition, to the overall solar system as described, a 40 kW Kohler generator was added as an overall backup to the system.
