Do you need your fix of Texas-style BBQ? There is no place in Los Cabos like Taba BBQ. Located on 5 de Mayo just a block north of the civic park, Taba BBQ has one of the biggest smokers in Los Cabos (affectionately referred to as Big Bertha by Kris Kabush, the owner). We first started to enjoy Kris’ BBQ during the pandemic when he offered delivery on take out on weekends from his house in Chamizal in San Jose del Cabo. The two years ago, he opened an actual location on the Terminal 1 Pier by Breathless. Almost a year ago, he moved to his new location. With both inside (air conditioned) and outside covered seating, the atmosphere is great. Consistent with the food, the music playing on the speakers is blues from artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B King and more.
I could go to Taba BBQ just for the sides – mac & cheese, chili beans, potato salad, coleslaw and fries. On New Year’s Eve, we went for a whale watching and sunset cruise with Cabo Sails and then went to Taba BBQ for an early dinner. They even have parking beside the restaurant so you don’t have the typical problem of finding a place to park in Cabo San Lucas and walking to your restaurant. As usual, we were greeted by the friendly staff and chose a table inside. Our server brought over the house made BBQ sauces and explained each of them. Tracey, who loves spice just wanted to know which ones were the hottest. I ordered some of the Texas Queso dip that is melted cheese with some bits of brisket and other spices that is served with tortilla chips and chicharron (pork rinds).
True to form, I ordered the large size of the potato salad, chili beans, Mac & Cheese, coleslaw and french fries for the table. My entrée choice was the pulled pork sandwich. Both Beth and Tracy ordered the small Brisket plate, which is served with onions, pickles and a roll. Chris ordered the medium ribs – also served with onions, pickles and rolls. When the food was served, Tracy dug into the BBQ sauces to test how truly hot they were and we all sampled the sides.
The portion sizes are great and we also end up with enough left over to take home for another snack or lunch. The food was delicious, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. With a few drinks, we decided to have an early evening and didn’t make it all the way to midnight to watch the fireworks from all of the hotels in San Jose del Cabo (although one set was launched at 11:00pm, which we saw).
Thanks Kris for having such a great place. See you soon.
