We had talked about how much we liked Kris Kabush’s creation of Taba BBQ that Bill and Tanya demanded that we go there for dinner together. Kris was the original Executive Chef at District and during the pandemic he offered weekend pick up or delivery of Texas BBQ from his home in Chamizal in San Jose del Cabo. It was so successful that he opened Taba BBQ on the pier by Breathless on the marina in Cabo San Lucas. However, when a space became available on Cinqo de Mayo a few blocks north of the square on Calle Hidalgo in Cabo San Lucas, he jumped to completely renovated the space into the new location for Taba BBQ. With both outdoor (under cover) and indoor air-conditioned space, it is a very comfortable location.
The first thing that you see when you enter the restaurant is the huge smoker and grill in the kitchen just to the left of the door. Most of their meats are smoked for hours before being served. The restaurants have a number of big screen television that either feature sports or blues music videos for the guests.
As it was a warm evening, we decided to take a table inside. Our server gave us the menus and asked if we would like anything to drink. Making our drink orders, Bill and Tanya started to study the menu. Bill asked for his Pacifico, I had a draft beer, Beth had sparkling water and Tanya ordered a Limonada Mineral. Both Beth and I knew what we wanted from previous visits. Personally, I could go to Taba solely for the sides and always end up taking extra orders home after the meal.
For appetizers, we order the Texican Queso, which is a cheese dip with brisket, onions, cheese and tomatoes on top and served with both tortilla chips and chicharron. We also ordered the Texas Twinkies, which are bacon wrapped brisket and cheese in jalapeno peppers. Bill loves spice and so the Twinkies were right up his alley. For main courses, Beth ordered a half pound of brisket; I ordered the pulled pork sandwich; Tanya selected the loaded stuffed potato and Bill had both the pulled chicken sandwich and a huge sausage in a roll. We selected large orders of four of the sides – Texas potato salad, Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw and Chili Beans. The brisket and sandwiches came with rolls and onions. Taba BBQ makes its own BBQ sauces with different flavors that are in a small case on the table to spice your choice.
Talk about a feast! The table was silent for a while as everyone dug into their food. As always the food was amazing, the service was great and we were stuffed by the end of the meal. I ordered my extra sides to take home.
