The Marinas of Los Cabos

John Anderson, Editor

Los Cabos is uniquely situated on the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. This means that it is the perfect place to be on the water. To take full advantage of this opportunity, two marinas have been built in Los Cabos – one in Cabo San Lucas and the other in Puerto Los Cabos on the edge of San Jose del Cabo. A third yacht basin is part of the Four Seasons Resort at Costa Palmas further up the East Cape. Enrique Fernandez del Castillo was involved in the construction of all three.

The first marina to be built was in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo is the center of the sport fishing industry in Los Cabos. The marina in Cabo San Lucas is not only for private yachts but houses a wide range of marine businesses – sunset cruises, snorkeling and scuba diving trips, glass bottom boats to view the marine life at Land’s End, water taxis to visit Lover’s Beach and of course, all sizes of charter fishing boats. The marina is also a center of activity in Cabo San Lucas as it is surrounded by restaurants and shops with a sidewalk that allows you to stroll around the outside of the whole marina and look at the boats and yachts.

Many years later, as part of the overall development of Puerto Los Cabos by Eduardo Sanchez Navarro, a marina was built in La Playita. Prior to the marina, small panga fishing boats were pulled up on the beach allowing fishing trips to the Gordo Banks. The current marina replaced a series of soccer fields that were in the flats of La Playita. Construction also had to be done careful to seal the saltwater marina from the adjacent estuary with fresh water and the home of lots of birds and water fowl.

The marina currently has slips that will accommodate about 250 boats, with the ability to expand with an additional 250 slips. With the marina came the El Ganzo Hotel and several new restaurants in La Playita as well as a large storage and marine service operation. The marina in Puerto Los Cabos also offers a number of charter opportunities for fishing, scuba diving and just enjoying the Sea of Cortez.
