Anyone who lives in Los Cabos or who has visited over the past 20 years has wondered about the abandoned grey concrete building on the marina in Cabo San Lucas (commonly referred to as the Grey Ghost). Nothing was happening with the projects as it was financed by a Japanese bank, unwilling to write it down and had liens against it from the workers’ unions until the previous President of Mexico asked Eduardo Sanchez Navarro if he would take it on if he (the President) could solve the problem. The result, a few years later the project is in full motion. The Place at Cabo is planned to combine a hotel, mall, condominiums and a trolley along the marina when it is completed.
For now, the entry area of The Place at Cabo has become an outdoor food court and shops to engage residents and tourists alike. Entering from Blvd Marina, there are over 20 restaurants and shops in the open area leading down to the marina. Well-known restaurants from other areas – Jardin Secreto (San Jose del Cabo), Buzos (La Paz) – bars, clothing stores, a major art gallery (Minch Gallery), a series of stalls with artisanal products, a jewelry store, and live entertainment on Saturday nights make this a special place to visit.
The restaurants and shops are set within a winding path and trees from the Blvd to the marina, creating a very pleasant atmosphere. Whether you are interested in cocktails, Mexican food, Italian food, Sushi or Sashimi, or tequila tasting, you will find it in the Place Cabo. Shops include women’s and men’s clothing, a leather shop, an Oyster jewelry store, household items and a whole long line of booths of all types of items. Large metal sculptures decorate the area. You can even by branded gear from The Place at Cabo in one of the shops. Some of the renovation of the buildings is also on display as two of the townhouse style shops are completed adjacent the artisanal booth walkway. Standing on the malecon along the marina and looking up, you can see the start of the transformation of the Grey Ghost.
Reels from the social media of The Place at Cabo show live music, a ferris wheel, and even magic being performed on Saturday nights in the location.
