From the time we first purchased our condo in El Conquistador in San Jose del Cabo in 1991, The Tropicana Inn became one of our favorite places for family dinners. Our daughters loved it there and got to know all the waiters. When we moved to Zacatitos on the East Cape, we would drive in regularly with the family for dinner and to enjoy the Bananas Flambé for dessert.
We were sad when the Inn closed and watched carefully as it went through the renovation managed by Miguel Sanchez Navarro. On October 7th, The Tropicana Inn reopened for locals and will open in November as Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. I had the opportunity to be given a tour by the Howard, the Director of Sales after I had breakfast at the restaurant (it was only open for breakfast then but is open for all three meals now). The restaurant, Tropicana Cocina de las Californias is a farm-to-table restaurant that features the flavors of the Baja.
What an amazing renovation, expansion and re-visualization of this historic property in San Jose del Cabo! In the past, the bar was just inside from the outdoor patio in front and there was a large dining room down eight or so steps at the back of the bar room. Now, while there are two restaurants in the boutique hotel, only the one in the front is open to the public. The other restaurant down below is open for guests of the hotel. Going up the stairs from the restaurant to the balcony, there is seating, a private dining room large enough to seat a large group and even have live entertainment. Out the back of that private dining room is a deck with outdoor seating and a small ball room to the right that can be configured for meetings, dinners or movies. This outdoor terrace with a wide range of seating will also be used for meet and greets with local artists during the weekly artwalk of San Jose del Cabo.
The terrace provided the first look at the completely renovated boutique hotel. A third floor was added to the U-shaped hotel. The total number of rooms expanded from 38 to 70, including two suites. There is a large business area with a deck for digital nomads to work in a pleasant outdoor. space. All the rooms have been completely remodeled. The check-in area for guests coming in from Blvd Antonio Mijares is a comfortable space where guests can sit, have a drink while the check is handled digitally. The rooms will be accessible through your mobile phone. The main floor open space includes a new swimming pool and hot tub, a dining area, and a bar, just for the guests. There is also a yoga space on the third-floor deck and a message spa on the second floor. Tropicana also features a Wellness Center and Gym for its guests to enjoy.
To the left (east) of the hotel, they are in process of creating a new garden, when Sunday brunches and events can be held around the large tree. Lots of parking will be available at the back of this area. Also, off of Centenario is a way to enter at the back to make unloading of luggage easy for guests.
Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton is truly a luxury space. But the hotel wants its guests to explore the Los Cabos area. Bikes are available at the back entrance, maps of hiking trails and biking trails will be available to guests, as will information about the adventures that they may want to experience around San Jose del Cabo.
I look forward to attending the Grand Opening in early November. It is time for all the long-time loyal local guests of Tropicana Inn to come back to experience this great meeting, eating and drinking location once again, and see the new Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
