Located on Blvd Antonio Mijares across from Saint Luke’s Urgent Care, Tropico Mariscos is a hidden gem in San Jose del Cabo. Kris Kabush of Taba BBQ had recommended that we try it, saying that the tacos are unusual and great. It is a very small place – only three wooden tables overlooking the boulevard. Diners are welcomed by Lola, the border collie who brings her toy to be thrown so that she can fetch it and drop it at your feet to continue.
The menu is a simple checklist that includes appetizers, tostadas, empanadas, tacos and dessert. Similarly, the drink list is simple with several of the flavor waters being made and bottled by the restaurant. Omar, the owner asked us what we would like to drink. Beth ordered the limonada and I chose the cucumber water. Both were served in Tropico bottles and were very good.
For our dinner, Beth went for shrimp – a shrimp empanada and the battered shrimp taco. I selected the tuna tostada and a BBQ chicken taco. Everything was clearly made at the restaurant. Beth was very impressed with her two shrimp dishes, saying they had great flavor. The tuna tostada amazed me. It was two square tostadas piled high with tuna, pineapple, avocado, and small seeds. It was delicious and a good-sized portion. The BBQ chicken was also very good with lots of chicken in a tasty BBQ sauce with fruit and tomato and greens to add to the flavor.
Overall, we were impressed. If you are looking for interesting tacos, empanadas, or ceviche and other seafoods at a reasonable place, Tropico Mariscos is a good choice. The only thing that I would recommend is that you consider bringing a cushion for the wooden chairs – my butt hurt! You will also have fun both playing with Lola and watching her protect the restaurant as people and other dogs walk by.
Tropico doesn’t seem to have its own digital presence (an empty Instagram page) by has lots of reviews on TripAdvisor and Google with a 4.8 and 4.9 rating, respectively. https://www.tripadvisor.com.mx/Restaurant_Review-g152516-d23111565-Reviews-Tropico_Mariscos-San_Jose_del_Cabo_Los_Cabos_Baja_California.html
