Valentine’s Day at H Restaurant in The Art District a True Hidden Gem

John Anderson, Editor

Looking for a romantic and intimate restaurant with great food in San Jose del Cabo? Give H Bistro in the Art District a try. This was our choice for our Valentine’s Dinner. H Bistro has been open for 15, we only recently discovered this gem. The restaurant recently changed locations to the street across from Casa Paulina on Jose Maria Morelos in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo. The change of location reflected a change in vision and name – H Garden Venue.

The owner, Luis Herrera Blanc is joined by his son Chef Luis Herrera Thatcher. Chef Luis was trained at Culinary Institute in Mexico City and then went to New York for further training and worked for five years in top restaurants in Manhattan. He brought everything he learned back to Los Cabos and provides both and excellent menu at H Bistro as well as offering special dinners for you at home. H Garden is now open only Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5:00 to 10:00 pm with a special Arts and Bistro Collection menu that changes every two weeks. It is a pre-set five course menu that is served family style.

Luis let us to our table and gave us the pre-set menu. Looking at the menu, there were two items in the appetizer course, two items in the main course and two desserts, in addition to the salad and pasta courses. So, naturally we asked if we need to choose between the two items in these courses. Luis responded that everything on the menu was served family style. So, five courses with a total of eight dishes that were part of the dinner.

Our server then asked us what we would like to drink serving me still and Beth sparkling water. I chose a glass of Chardonnay, which was Casa Madero from Valle de Guadalupe and Beth asked for a Pina Colada. We were each served a plate with a pat of butter and a clove of cooked garlic and then given warm crusty rolls – delicious. The first thing served to us was a paper-wrapped bowl with Truffle French fries. They were crispy with a great favor, which could be enhanced even more with the mayonnaise-based sauce or ketchup. Beth was in heaven. The next appetizer was a large plate of Sea Bass Carpaccio in a lemon type sauce with small pieces of olive. Beth doesn’t eat raw fish, and so I had the plate to myself. What a dream? The next course was a BLT Salad with bacon, lettuce and three types of tomato in a lemon and olive dressing with blue cheese. Beth asked that the blue cheese be on the side. So, it was just for me and is one of my favorites. The third course was pasta – gnocchi in a light red sauce. The main course included both a baked flounder with potatoes in a sweet corn sauce and beef tournedos with large mushroom caps. The beef melted in my mouth, and I love mushrooms. The temperature was perfect for me, but Beth had them cook hers just a little more. There was so much food, in full portion sizes and so several of the courses had part that went into to-go boxes. As full as we were, it was impossible to ignore the two desserts – a chocolate cake with layers of chocolate mousse in a strawberry sauce with lots of fresh berries and vanilla ice cream with a large chocolate chip cookie and fresh berries. What an experience!

The atmosphere was comfortable and cozy but elegant at the same time. I asked Luis what they had to do to prepare the restaurant. He explained that it was a parking lot and the whole restaurant was built from scratch. The vine covered wall, the use of adobe style brick, the hanging lights and plants, the street light stairway to the restrooms and kitchen, all produced an amazingly comfortable setting. The white tablecloths, embroidered napkins with the H logo, and the change of dishes and silverware with every course provided the feeling of elegance of a five-star restaurant. The service matched the quality and presentation of the food. All at a very reasonable price for the full-size portions of the five-course dinner. In fact, it is priced less than many of the tasting menus in Los Cabos, with small portions.

I asked Luis when the next menu change would be. He indicated that it would change again in early March. I told him that we would be back with friends.
