Water Activities in Los Cabos

Water Activities in Los Cabos

John Anderson, Editor

Other than fishing, there are a lot of great things to do in and on the water in Los Cabos. This post provides an overview of some of those activities and where to enjoy them.

Surfing and Kite Surfing – Los Cabos is one of the greatest areas in the world for surfing. While you can enjoy surfing all year around, as the summer arrives, so do the waves. On the Pacific, Cerritos is one of the most popular places to surf – with several different surf breaks. Places like the Pescadero Surf Camp even have surf boards and wet suits to rent. On the Sea of Cortez, Costa Azul is a popular surf break on the corridor just south of San Jose del Cabo. You can rent a surf board and get surfing lessons at Zipper’s Bar and Grill on the beach or across the highway at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Of course, the East Cape of Los Cabos is where people camp out in the arroyos in the summer just to surf. Shipwrecks, La Fortuna, 9 Palms and Vinoramas all have great surf breaks. If want to kite surf, just go a little further up the Sea of Cortez to Los Barriles or La Ventana and enjoy the wind.

Snorkeling – The marine life in Los Cabos is amazing and there are some safe and easy places to snorkel to be able to see the fish, eels and other sea life on the rocks or the coral. Snorkeling tours are available out of the marina in Cabo San Lucas. However, you can enjoy snorkeling almost anywhere along the Sea of Cortez where you see some rocks near the shore. One of the most popular areas in Chileno Bay on the corridor. You can park near the beach and easily swim out to the rocks that teem with sea life. This is one of the main spots that snorkeling tours visit from Cabo San Lucas. We even had lots to see right in front of our house in Zacatitos. Of course, one of the most famous places is Cabo Pulmo National Park. This is a reserve that protects one of the biggest reefs on the west coast of North America.

Scuba Diving – Our daughter did her Explore Scuba dive when she came to visit us a few years ago. She was so excited she went back to Denver and did the course and swimming pool classes to prepare for certification. She then came back and did her open water dives for certification with Manta Divers out of the marina in Cabo San Lucas. Once certified, she really started to enjoy what was available in Los Cabos. From a night dive with Manta to coastal dives including diving to see hammerhead sharks on the outer edge of Gordo Banks (straight out from our old house in Zacatitos). She did several dives from Puerto Los Cabos with East Cape Explorers. But her favorite was her trip to Cabo Pulmo to dive to see the Bull sharks. With a great underwater case for her iPhone, she came back from everyone of the dives with amazing photos and videos. If you want to get a sense of what you can see, check out DeAnn Kizzar’s photos on Facebook. She is a certified scuba instructor that can take you out to experience the underwater delights of Los Cabos.

Parasailing, Jet Skis, Jet Boards – There are so many adventures that you can have when you visit Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas. The rental places on the beach can set you up with single or tandem parasailing. Taking off from the back of a boat as the parachute is unfurled, you soar hundreds of feet above the water and get an amazing view of all of Cabo San Lucas – the town, the arches at Land’s End, the mountains and all of the resorts. Our daughters use to love doing this with me when they were young. If you are nervous about heights, you can enjoy touring the bay and Lands End on a jet ski or you can try your skills at riding a jet board that sends you out of the water on a stream of water. There are places that will guide or teach you how to take advantage of these adventurous sports. Or you can hop a water taxi with a glass bottom and travel over to Lover’s Beach at Land’s End.

Kayaking – Driving down the highway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, you may see vans with lots of kayaks on their roof racks. Whether you decide to take a kayaking tour or want to do it on your own, this is another way to enjoy either the Pacific or the Sea of Cortez. Paddle boards, single or double kayaks let you get out on the water and experience the marine life. At our house in Zacatitos, we would often see people paddling out in front, especially during whaling season as there is the chance to get a little closer to the grey whales as they train their babies to use their fins.

Sunset Cruises – If you would rather just enjoy being on the water (and not necessarily in it), there are many choices to take a private sunset cruise from both the marina in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos. Whether on a sailboat, a catamaran or a motor yacht, there is nothing like seeing the sun go down while enjoying a beverage and a snack on the deck of a boat. Being on the water also lets you see the stars as they rise with a little less light pollution.

Dinner and Party Cruises – If you are into the party scene, there are many choices from the marina in Cabo San Lucas. From the luxury of a four course meal on Animalon by the Sea to family friendly cruises on a pirate ship to booze and party cruises, visitors can have a great time on the water.

Whale Watching and Swimming with Whale Sharks – Los Cabos is one of the great places in the world for whale watching. From November to April, you can see grey whales, humpbacks and even a few orcas. We use to be able to sit on our deck at the house in Zacatitos and watch the grey whales teach their babies or watch multiple breaches by humpbacks as they moved either east or west in front of the house. There are lots of companies offering whale watching cruises from both Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos. But is you would rather get in the water and swim with whale sharks (which are neither whales not sharks but huge), you can book a tour in La Paz to do just that.
