Bistro by Sebastien Agnes in Plaza Pescador

Across from the hotels in San Jose del Cabo in Plaza Pescador is Bistro by Sebastien Agnes. This location was previously the restaurant Fish and Grill. Beth and I had been there years ago and were not impressed with either the food or the price. As we noticed the restaurant had changed and JP from Latino 8 mentioned the change, we decided to give it a try. Chef Sebastien is French and has extensive experience at restaurants in luxury hotels such as the St. Regis Bora Bora and as Executive Chef at SEARED in the One & Only. Thus, we anticipated a very positive change in the restaurant and its menu. On Facebook, it is listed as a French Restaurant.

We arrived for our reservation. There is air-conditioned seating inside or tables outside in the plaza. As it was a warm night, we chose inside and were led to a table for two and were offered menus. The inside dining room is very pleasantly designed with artwork, a large bar (with an incredible selection of Clase Azul tequilas) and about seven tables and seating at the bar. We were asked what we would like to drink. I, of course ordered a glass of Chardonnay – and H High California Chardonnay that I had not had before – and Beth selected sparkling water.

A review of the menu revealed a good selection of Raw Bar items – oysters, clams, ceviche, tuna tartar – a selection of appetizers – salads, crab cakes, guacamole, onion rings – several different tacos and main courses of shellfish, seafood, steak, and even fish and chips and a cheeseburger. Despite the description as a French Restaurant, it appears that the French influence is more with the breakfast menu of Crepes and Waffles.

To start, Beth ordered the Caesar Salad, and I selected the Tuna Tartar from the Raw Menu. The portion size for both was quite large. The dressing on the Caesar Salad was quite creamy and Beth like it a lot. The Tuna Tartar was served with a citrus soy sauce, avocado and thin strips of fried tortilla and radish slices. A bowl of tortilla chips accompanied the dish. The tuna was fresh and abundant. We both actually ended up taking about half of our appetizers home.

For our main courses, Beth selected the shrimp tacos on flour tortillas, and I ordered the fish and chips. The ordered of shrimp tacos included three tacos with five small shrimp on each served with guacamole, sizzling garlic and chile. The fish and chips included a very large piece of deep-fried fish with crispy french fries and tartar sauce, ketchup and a lemon wedge. The fish was delicious. Once again, the portions were fairly large.

At the end of the meal, we decided to try some dessert as well. I ordered the Tarte Tartin (a French dessert favorite of mine) served with ice cream. Beth ordered the Chocolate Mousse – another great French dessert. Both were excellent.

The service was attentive and well done. The manager, Ari stopped by to see how we had enjoyed our meal and to answer our questions about the opening of Bistro by Sebastien Agnes.
