There was a lot of buzz about a Greek/Mediterranean Restaurant from La Paz opening in Todos Santos. Located on Brisa del Pacifico, just across the road from La Esquina as you come up from the arroyo between downtown and the north side of Todos Santos, Apostolis is both a deli and a restaurant. With seating outside on the deck of the small Plaza Las Refranes, Apostolis offers deli items inside the building – olive oil, cheeses, salsas and more.
As I walked into the deli, I was greeted by Apostolis, the chef and owner of the restaurant. He told me that he had been a chef for 50 years, much of the time on cruise ships. He described his passion for food and for the items in his deli and showed me the menu, which features both hot and cold Greek or Mediterranean appetizers – tappenade, tzatziki, dolmadakia, hummus – salads, soup, shiskabobs of chicken, beef, shrimp or octopus, and beef, fish and lamb main courses. You can even have a gyro of your choice.
I took a table outside. I love avgolemeno soup but unfortunately it takes three hours to prepare and I arrived just as the restaurant was opening. I ordered a chicken souvlaki and a Diet Coke. My server brought me a small amuse of a triangle of pita with tapenade on top. The tapenade was excellent. When the souvlaki was served, the large kabob of chicken (8 pieces), onions, peppers, and tomato served on a bed or rice with grilled vegetables and tzatziki (the yoghurt-based dip). Chef Apostolis had told me that he only used fresh (not frozen) chicken from a local farm. The chicken was juicy, the flavors amazing and vegetables grilled to perfections. Even though I am on a high protein diet, I had to try the baklava for dessert. It was amazing.
The anticipation for this restaurant which has only been open for a few months was very well deserved. Great food, service, and atmosphere.
