Located off Centenario on the road behind the stadium is a relatively new seafood restaurant – Mariscos El Tiberon de San Carlos. I had tried it for lunch and decided to go back with two friends from the East Cape for dinner. Unfortunately, it was night during the San Jose Festival, which meant getting to it through the police barricades was a challenge. The outdoor restaurant is very pleasant. We could see the ferris wheels out the back of the restaurant. Large flat screen TVs play videos of Mexican music. The menu is extensive with appetizers, cold seafood specialties, seafood cocktails, aguachiles, ceviche, oysters and clams in the shell, tostadas, tacos, grilled octopus, lobster, shrimp, and fish filets. There are even meat and chicken choices for non-seafood lovers, and a kid’s menu.
Our server brought us menus and a large basket of tostadas, crackers, and a chipotle sauces as a starter for the table, which also had a basket of every hot sauce you can image. Ethan and Larry asked for the half-order of Campechana, a cocktail in a large glass with shrimp, fish, and other seafood in a cocktail sauce. Each was big enough for two people and excellent. Larry and I both chose the Baja Fish Tacos as our main course, which came with Pico de Gallo, coleslaw, guacamole and another sauce. There were three tacos with three pieces of breaded fish in each. A very large portion and very good. Ethan ordered the Shrimp French Style. This was a large platter of shrimp in four cheeses with mashed potatoes and salad, and served with garlic bread. Again, the portion was huge and could have fed at least two diners. At the end, Larry and Ethan had a shot of a small special cocktail (sorry, don’t know what was in it).
The atmosphere is very nice, the service excellent, the portions large, flavorful and very reasonable. Very worth the visit.
