With our townhouse under construction in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2, we knew that we wanted to upgrade from the standard granite countertops that are provided for the kitchen and outdoor kitchen in the unit. The developer using Cabo Stone just at the entrance to Cabo San Lucas on the highway.
When we built our house in Zacatitos in 1998, there was only a single granite countertop supplier and fabricator in Los Cabos. They were located in the lot beside Artisanos. The sample slabs were leaned up against the outside wall of Artesanos. Now, there are granite and stone stores on almost every corner. The Office Max that was in the Fresko shopping center is now a stone store. The former Banamex in the plaza by the Vidanta Golf Course is now a stone store and there are at least a dozen along the highway to and beyond the airport in San Jose del Cabo.
As we have a credit to use Cabo Stone who are doing all of the countertops in the development, we went in to visit and see what our options were. We were interested in quartz rather than granite. However, while this would be fine for inside, we were informed that it would not work for the outdoor kitchen. Apparently, under constant sun the quart can swell and develop ripples in the surface. As a result, we decided to to with quartzite. Our countertops were slightly a different size that other Cardon units as we had added a floor to ceiling pantry beside the refrigerator and we are having a free-standing island built with a quartzite top.
The selection of quartzite was quite fantastic. As we had the lower cabinets in the kitchen painted a green and the uppers white, we wanted to make sure that the quartzite would work with these colors. We also wanted some movement in the quartzite itself. We selected two different quartzites slabs – one for indoor and outdoor. The outdoor slab had much more movement in it. We also asked Cabo Stone to square off the pieces cut out for the sinks in both kitchens to be used as cutting boards.
The kitchen has been measured and we are just awaiting actual installation once other work has been finished.
Cabo Stone has a very large fabrication area and has much more than just stone slabs. There are examples of a wide variety of stone vessel sinks, bathtubs and other furniture.
