Located on Leona Vicario just north of the 19 Highway to Todos Santos is a small Sinaloan restaurant, Cenaduria Mary Chuy. With about a dozen tables, this covered outdoor restaurant is very nicely laid out. Our waiter, Jesus brought us menus and asked us what we would like to drink. Beth chose a jamaica water, Bill and Dianne had Pacifico, Tanya ordered a Coke and I went for a Diet Coke. It was a long time since I had seen Coke in 500 ml bottles! The menu offered a number of appetizers – many of which were full meals – like guacamole, tostadas, quesadillas, enchiladas, gorditas and tacos; soups, sandwiches, a house special, lots of sides and even a kid’s menu.
We asked for two orders of guacamole for the table to start. The bowls of guacamole were huge, included chopped tomatoes and onions, with a large basket of tortilla chips. It was one of the best tasting guacamoles that I had tried in Los Cabos and everyone agreed. We ended up sampling much of the menu for our main courses. Tanya ordered the Mary Chuy’s Special, a combination of tostada, gordita, sope, taco, and chimichanga. The platter was huge and could easily serve two or three people. A lot of sharing occurred. The flavors were amazing. Dianne chose the Enchiladas Suiza with chicken and a green sauce. Once again, the three large enchiladas could feed at least two people and were served with refried beans, sliced cucumber and tomato. Bill had one of them after devouring his chicken enchiladas with a red sauce (he loves spicy). Beth asked for the baked potato with arrachera, served with tortillas, Pico de Gallo, and a light avocado sauce. I decided on two tostadas – one chicken and one beef. The tostadas were covered with shredded beef or shredded chicken covered with lettuces, carrot slices, avocado and of course, the guacamole was still on the table. Even with all of this food we were not finished. Jesus brought over a tray showing the desserts that were available. Dianne and Tanya ordered the guava cake (really like a cheese cake with guava and caramel on top) and Bill chose the Blackberry Jam Cheesecake. They were all very pleased with their choices.
During our meal, we had the pleasure of watching the parade of cars and trucks go by with the candidates for the Princess of Baja Sur, with cheers and honking horns. Although the restaurant is on a busy street, we had a great time. The portions were huge, the flavors incredible, and the service friendly and very attentive. Thank you, Jesus. This local restaurant is one that is worth the visit – and the prices are extremely reasonable.
