COOL BEANS SAN JOSE DEL CABO

John Anderson, Editor

Are you a fan of Happy Days and the look of the 60s American diner? Then, Cool Beans Los Cabos is a restaurant that you may want to visit. Located on the corner of Ignacio Zaragoza (the down street) and Vicente Guerrero in the Art District in San Jose de Cabo, Cool Beans was created in small town Kansas by Angela Stoughton, who grew up influenced by her flower child mother, listening to her mother’s turntable constantly playing the music of the 60s and 70s. She learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen and ultimately opened the first Cool Beans in Sterling, Kansas.

Murals of the great bands of this era adorn the outside walls and windows. A rack of magazines like Life and Time are displayed in two magazines racks for people to explore the time period for themselves. There are statutes of Elvis, The Blues Brothers, and the walls are covered with old posters of rock bands, and even at hooked rug of mushrooms. The furniture is classic 60s American diner with booths and tables in two-tone blue. There are even Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man video games in the main dining room (and several people were playing them while we were there!). The rooftop dining, where live music is played has a large bar in the shape of an old VW bus.

We visited Cool Beans in February of 2025 soon after it opened. In the meantime, the owners have streamlined the menu focusing on breakfasts with names reminiscent of the era – I’m the Eggman, Satisfaction, La Bamba – burgers filled with beef, portobello mushroom, chicken, pastor, roast beef; hot dogs and pizza; sandwiches with lots of stuff inside – turkey, ham, bacon, roast beef, club and even a veggie sandwich; salads and more. All of the items on the menu are named for the era. All of the main items come with a choice of a “Good Buddy” – fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, potato chips, or Mac & Cheese. There is even a kid’s menu. As, you can imagine, the music of the 60s and 70s is featured on the sound system in the restaurant.

We ordered our drinks and Beth decided to try the personal margherita pizza (That’s Amore) with a side of sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries were amazing (I snuck a few). I chose Elation – a sandwich with turkey, bacon, tomato, onion, cream cheese, avocado and honey mustard on whole wheat toast with onion rings on the side as my “Good Buddy.” The sandwich was excellent as were the onion rings. Our server was very friendly and helpful. So, we truly had our American diner experience at Cool Beans.
